National Feast of Lanterns 2008

This year Yorkshire Region takes great pleasure in inviting everyone to the Northern Events Arena better known as Pickering Showground, North Yorkshire.

The historic market town of Pickering (formerly known as Piceringas and Pykering) is situated between York and Scarborough & provides the official gateway to the beautiful North York Moors National Park, also known to many as the North Yorkshire Moors.

The town draws a large number of visitors (mostly during the summer months), many are day trippers visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway (the longest steam railway in England). The Beck Isle Museum is also a major visitor attraction with its unique collection of black and white photography and displays of rural life.

Nearby are the market towns of Malton, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley which can be easily accessed by car or public transport. Some of the U.K's prettiest villages such as Thornton Le Dale, Hutton Le Hole and Goathland are just a short drive away. Fans of the TV series Heartbeat will know Goathland as Aidensfield. Harry Potter fans can explore for locations used in the filming of Philosopher's Stone - a good place to start is the railway station in Pickering.

The outstanding North York Moors with rolling hills, valleys, rivers and abundant wildlife lead all the way to the Yorkshire Coast where you can visit Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Robin Hoods Bay. The city of York is just over half an hour by car.

York Minster is one of the great cathedrals of the world. We invite you to enjoy its vast spaces, filled with music and revealing the human imagination at work on glass, stone, and other fabrics.

Members of the Regions DA’s and Sections have a variety of THS’s in the area both before and after the event so why not extend your stay in such a beautiful part of England

The theme for 2008 is Christmas. What an opportunty to celebrate Christmas with your camping friends who you might not see until the following NFOL. We are sure that you must have some lights and decoration’s in the loft just waiting to be displayed in a warmer season than when they are usually brought out.

One thing that we can guarantee is that you will receive a good old Yorkshire welcome so lets have a good one.

Merry Christmas
